UK can cope with solar superstorms - Model

UK can cope with solar superstorm +++

  • The RAEng has predicted that a large solar storm would have serious effects on the UK, but would not shut down the entire country.
  •
  • There are 3 main areas affected by the solar outburst: GPS satellites, aviation services and possibly avionics, and communications.
  •
  • Solar storms are common and can affect satellites and spacecraft as well as causing radio interference.
  •
  • The UK electric grid is not at risk, but satellites might be affected. The GPS network would also be disturbed, but backups are in place.
  •
  • There are also human health concerns from the higher radiation dosage, but the risk is not considered to be significant.
